But there are instances that you can’t avoid accidents and it can occur anytime and anywhere. So take note of the following treatments that can help you in case of emergency. First thing to do is to put an ice on the swollen area and wait until the pain is lessened. Next, go to the nearest hospital and have an X-ray examination to make sure that there are no fractures or kneecap occurred.
When a sprained knee has been diagnosed then the doctor will recommend the RICE treatment (rest, ice, compress, elevate).
- Rest. The leg of the injured person must be rested and refrain from any movements and actions for few days or until there is little to no pain.
- Ice. It is important to keep the injured area iced for the first two or four days to decrease swelling. It should be three or four times each day, for about 15 minutes each.
- Compress. To reduce swelling of the injured leg, the sprained knee must be wrapped with an elastic bandage. Do not wrap it too tight and start wrapping below the knee going up, in a criss-cross direction.
- Elevate. It is advisable to keep the sprained knee elevated because it relieves the pain. It can be done by propping it up with a few pillows, with this the blood flow decreases which help to reduce the swelling.
Some doctors might advise those sprained knee patients to take Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, or Nuprin) but if the pain and swelling lingers more than a week, ask your doctor for an anti-inflammatory medication. After several days, the ice treatment should stop and must be replaced by heat treatment to bring back the flexibility and stiffness of the leg.
